From Awareness to Action

Are You Prepared?

One of the greatest challenges we face today is global poverty and hunger and all too often we don't see the direct impact we can have on this social injustice. Now is our chance to act and here is your call to action.

Until 20 January, 2010, Scouts Canada will be accepting applications to become a member of the Canadian Contingent to Mafikeng, South Africa (formerly Mafeking) to work with Scouts South Africa to build community food gardens and rainwater reservoirs to help in this battle against poverty and hunger. The project will take place from 5-26 August, 2010 and the expected cost per person is $3500.

For those of you thinking that you've heard the name Mafikeng (or Mafeking as it's more generally known to Scouts), that's because this is the same location where Baden-Powell defended the city against a siege that lasted 217 days from 1899-1900. Baden-Powell became a hero of the British Empire, and shortly afterwards, the Scouting Movement was born. It was from this siege that B-P first came up with the idea for Scouting.

Now, 110 years later, there is a new need to defend the city of Mafikeng. This time, it's not against siege or conflict. This time, it's against poverty and hunger, and everyone has a role to play. In order to generate change, we need action, and action can only come from awareness.
